How to Add a Zipper to a Crochet Purse or Bag

Easily sew a zipper onto your crochet purse of bag with these simple steps.

Materials:

  • Zipper that is the correct length for your purse or bag opening

  • Pins

  • Sewing needle

  • Thread that matches in colour to your crochet purse or bag

  • Sewing machine (optional)

1) With the zipper in the closed position, center it onto your crochet purse or bag and pin the ends to the edges of the bag first. To ensure the zipper is aligned straight, you can line it up visually with the desired round of crochet stitches. Make sure the right side of the zipper is facing up. Open the zipper and pin along both sides every couple of inches.

2) With a needle and thread tie a knot at the end of your thread and feed it through the back of the zipper behind where the pins are in order to hide the knot.

3) Feed the needle back through right beside the same entry point and all the way through the crochet purse.

4) Continue to stitch in the same fashion, with each stitch on the zipper side several mm in length each. Stitch all the way around the zipper and end with a knot on the same side of the zipper as shown in step 1.

Voila! You are done. You may now wish to add a bag liner to help your crochet purse or bag keep its shape and to add durability. Check out my tutorial for adding bag liner by clicking here.
